John, i know that the '98 intra-day highs were lower than the highs recorded most recently...the TRIN is a descriptive t/a indicator - i.e. it currently describes quite nicely how big the selling pressure in especially the liquid big cap stocks is.
a common mistake is to apply bull market parameters to this indicator in what is obviously not a bull market anymore. in other words, TRIN spikes that have denoted lasting lows during the bull only denote temporary lows now, and the spikes are bigger.
also, keep an eye on the following combination: HIGH TRIN and HIGH TICK at the same time...whenever this combo appears, it describes distribution from big to small traders - strong to weak hands.
