Every major corporation that has its mail gateway flipped on contributes another tens of thousands to the count. And for those enterprises who support VPN access for their energy-saving <cough!> telecommutes, which are very often separate accounts from their employee's personal accounts, ditto.

The pursuit of a real number gets to be _real_ silly at some point. Not only are paying customers counted, but those who use free email accounts, and free access accounts, as well. It's a marketecturist's delight.
