The Democrats had candidates that were much better qualified and I didn't think that the elder Bush was all that bad. But that constant drumbeat of scandals, invented and ones with at least some basis in reality, pushed me into Bill's camp. Much of the stuff seemed to be simply made up, others were gross exaggerations of reality. Remember the trail of bodies? Like we were supposed to believe that Bill was having all those people killed and somehow was keeping it hushed up. I am still not clear about the "why" of Whitewater, as near as I can tell the Clintons lost money on the deal, if they were so smart to cover things so deep, why did they neglect that detail? Or how about the way most of the illegal drugs flowing into this country were being routed through Arkansas? The Clintons didn't seem to benefit much from that either. I dunno about you, but if I was arranging for a large fraction of the illegal drugs to be routed through my state I would get a small percentage for it. And it should add up pretty quick... Okay, he has a zipper control problem. Okay, he lies about his personal life. Okay, he could have saved himself some grief by being more open when the vultures were picking over everything. The present mess about the pardons could very well be something similar, there is no real scandal here, but he stonewalls when pressed. And because so many believe that "when there is smoke there is fire"...
