I may not have read backwards enough, when brees (an old pal) brought this to my attention. My assumption, from the context, was that it was a discussion of mankind's dominion over the Earth, and the creatures thereon. That is the use of "dominion" in Genesis, to which Solon seemed to refer. By the way, dominion is usually interpreted, at least nowadays, as "stewardship", not relentless exploitation, in theological circles.
In regard to human beings, dominion is always too strong a word for appropriate relationships, even ones that require a substantial degree of guardianship. Human beings always deserve a degree of respect that enjoins, as much as possible, reciprocity in the relationship....... |
