When Win98 grabs a file and won't let go, I make a copy of it. After setting the attributes -S, -H, -R, the copy of the file can be manipulated any way you wish. Cheers, PW. P.S. Guessing time... Notepad probably tries to open the file in Read/Write mode. Your system may be disallowing write mode while using the file. Copying opens the source file in ReadOnly mode, which your system finds acceptable.
