I started looking for articles on tunable lasers and found quite a few. Keep in mind you have to compare speed, power, and distance because there are trade-offs.

Performance compromises Right now, there's a trade-off between tunable range and output power. Some lasers can be configured to replace any of the lasers in today's 40-channel DWDM systems, but they won't sustain very long transmission distances. Other lasers will deliver loads of oomph for a long-haul network, but they won't cover many wavelengths.
