Bill,

"When will the P-4 get to market?"

According to zdnet.de the vice-president of Intel, Louis Burns, said at the IDF that as early as in Q3 2001 there will be more Pentium 4s sold than Pentium IIIs thanks to the Brookdale chipset with SDRAM support. In q4, an enhanced version of the Brookdale chipset will offer DDR support.

See zdnet.de (in German)

I wonder how Intel wants to ship more P4s than PIIIs as long as the Pentium 4 is still produced in 0.18µ. Besides, I believe that the P4 with SDRAM will be a rather poor performer. The real threat will start in q4 when the P4 will be made in 0.13µ and have DDR support (and be above 2 GHz).

Anyway, AMD's PR department will have quite a lot to do in the next months to counter Intel's enormous marketing campaign.

My take is that q4 will be difficult. But the situation might improve considerably next year when the Clawhammer will be released bringing 64-bit computing to the desktop.

Peter
