I agree. The relationship potential of marriage has improved over time. Conversely, though, that kind of relationship can be had outside of marriage. The marriage part is only the legal trappings that sit atop the relationship (or form the foundation of the relationship, depending on how you look at it). The marriage "contract" in our society is like a package tour. You can buy the package or you can go a la carte. The standard package isn't in the best interest of all couples with great relationships.

The salient divorce that has occurred in the last few decades IMO is the divorce between relationship and marriage.
