*OT* DMP- I should have qualified. Of course, there are profs that carry the load for the university.....the true professionals....and, yes, they are unappreciated, work long hours for (relatively) low pay...
Why? Because they are paying for all the deadwood that exists.....in administration, costly/unnecessary services, for programs that are unnecessary and not self-supportive, and all the tenured profs that no longer give a damn... As you know, the decision-making process is so convoluted (sp?)...its a wonder anything ever gets done....could you imagine a company in which the boss would have to have a meeting with half of the workforce everytime there is a (somewhat) significant decision, not only wait for input and consensus, but have to stroke a thousand egos at the same time (that's a good idea, Frank, but...").....that company would never get anything done, and decisions would frequently be diluted to the point of becoming meaningless....Best point: Even if the company chief is successful, the employees can vote him out at a whim!
Welcome to the world of the modern university...
Sorry, didn't intend to slight some of the truly brilliant hard-working types there. I'm sure you're one! |
