Who ever heard of a gold company initiating a dividend program? Certainly not in these long recent years of despair among loyal but long-suffering gold investors.

Well, gold stocks have been on an upswing recently, not because the metal's price has been climbing -- gold prices are still near 20-year lows -- but because they look better than a lot of those deflating tech stocks. When times are turbulent, investors return to gold: There's something atavistic about it.

When a company such as Goldcorp comes in with a powerful earnings report and announces that it's going to start paying a dividend of 10 cents a share, as it did yesterday, the cheers ring out.

Goldcorp said better than expected results from its Red Lake Mine, which is one of the highest-grade gold mines in the world, accounted for the dividend, the first new one in anyone's memory.
