Thanks, Pat, for coming up with these articles. I've
bookmarked the lightreading web page. I note the following
two points:

1) (taken from the NUFO article): Startup Iolon Inc. is
also known to be making an ECL-based tunable laser, but
it's pursuing a more tricky design, Smith reckons. "Based
on the slides they show, it looks like Iolon is using the
cavity configuration that we use in our test and
measurement lasers. We abandoned that for telecom lasers
ages ago."

2) (taken from the "Big Challenges", probably outdated
report of 4/00): First, we haven't included external cavity
lasers in this listing. These devices move mirrors
mechanically and have a very wide tunable range. Vendors
include Agilent Technologies Inc.http://www.agilent.com and
New Focus Inc.http://www.newfocus.com. However, they're
mainly used in lab environments. They're not likely to find
widespread use in telecom networks.

I'd certainly doubt that last statement!

Knee-jerk reaction to today's JDSU annoucement not helping
the sector...

Thanks again,

Trilobyte
