I don't see this battle as such. This whole backwards compatibility
issue is more a matter of convenience during the inevitable
transition from those lousy 3.5" diskettes to _something_ else.
If someone really needs a 3.5" drive, they can buy an external one
for practically nothing. (not a terribly good option for laptop
users, I admit, but still an option.) The 3.5" has been around
far too long (just look at how hard drives, processor speeds,
RAM, etc have increased in capacity/performance... then look at
removable storage : 720kb --> 1.44Mb in th epast 10 years!)

Something will replace the floppy. The issue is not yet decided
but Zip has one heckuva lead. LS-120 is slow and expensive.

As far as IOM needing to lower disk costs, $1 is an unrealistic
goal. $6 or $7 I could agree with. Your idea of a lower cost,
lower capacity disk is not bad, though. But overall I think you
give backwards compatibility and the LS-120 waaay too much credit.

Just my opinion...
