It would make sense to test at the end of the year, for one day- not 5- and it would make sense to USE those tests for remediation- for example targeted summer school classes to remediate the students who would be in danger in the next grade.. Right now not a thing is done for the students who test badly. The teachers cannot use the tests to get special help for the students who need it- which is what they would like to do. The tests take 5 days, the teachers are pressured to teach to the tests- the standards and tests don't make a lot of sense (one example- flower parts are taught in 1st grade and leaves are in the science curriculum in 5th!!!!- what genius thought that up?) Almost all teachers are people of amazing goodwill, the people who go into teaching are just the nicest most compassionate people. Teachers want their kids to succeed- and you cannot test success into them.

The legislature is trying to micro manage curriculum and it will not work. You can get test scores to improve and degrade the education of the children at the same time- which is what is being done. Scores are meaningless, if the children are merely regurgitating without understanding. And, unfortunately, teachers are feeling pressure to simply cram children with unconnected facts. This does not promote true education.
