Margie -

Excellent post, that reflects in large part my thoughts as well. Thank you for sharing that with us.

As to: I thought Republicans don’t believe in excessive government intervention and regulation. How can Hatch or Starr justify their support?

That's a good question in which I'm not sure I can answer for them. BUT, if there's two areas that I can appropriate criteria to a 'bad' Republican that differentiates them from a 'good' Republican in a somewhat generalized sense from my standpoint is this:

1) A Republican that is FOR excessive Government regulation and intervention (if any measurable amount is needed). Ultimately hurting citizens/consumers (tax-indirect).
2) A Republican that is FOR higher taxation and not lower taxation. Ultimately hurting citizens/consumers (tax-direct).

Those two alone as far as I can see, have the ability to _undermine_ virtually in its entirety, any other 'conservative' belief towards any other such view(s) they may hold in ANY other given area(s) of conservative ideology. It really does get down to the heart of the matter; of what they say and, what they do in respect to what the role of Government should have in empowering/entrusting people vs. their role in empowering/entrusting Government. Money (in its many different forms of avenue-inflow to coffers) is the linchpin that cuts through all the 'I am a conservative' rhetoric which they state.
