If you go with vouchers you turn your back on the idea of universal public education- and the ramifications to doing that are very broad. Already we have a tremendous gap between the wealthy and the poor districts. Special charter schools in poor areas provide the illusion of hope, but in reality leave most kids in dire circumstances, since special schools often take kids on the basis of merit- and thus exclude the very children who need the most help. The parents that would be most like to take advantage of vouchers will save their children anyway- the children whom we REALLY need to educate are the children who will be stuck in the bad schools after all the "good" parents pull their children out. I do not want to see public education any more stratified than it already is. Gross systemic inequalities in a country that talks incessantly about equal opportunities, sickens me.
