Yes CA schools on average are not great. Our local ones in Santa Clara County are above the average, of course. My solution to that (OK some other factors were involved) is that my son lives in Chicago with his Mom the marketing vice-president. The Chicago suburbs have awesome schools, or at least New Trier HS seems to be. Football team sux, but they have a killer chess team. Son starts 9th grade in the Fall, just scored 99.9th percentile nationally on math ability. He prefers skateboarding and video games... I have an uncomfortable feeling he inherited both his ability and his attitude problem <g> I was surprised that the New Trier 9th grade didn't allow any computer programming type courses. Just computer usage. Top tier HS's are all so focussed on college admissions I'd expect curricula to be broadly similar nationally. Guess I can always home school him in C++ when he visits.
