That and the controlling members of Galveston thought that the port had enough business and the city was large enough, forgetting the basic rule, "Grow or Die". Galveston died. If it wasn't for Bill Mitchell pouring money into the re-development of Galveston during the '70s, it probably would be totally uninhabitable now. He did a good job for the city. For what it is worth, he was also behind the creation of The Woodlands. Not bad for someone who made his fortune drilling gas...

Wouldn't surprise me. Probably the Hofheinz's (sp?) or their buddies were behind it. A lot of that stuff seems to go on...
