You are naive , more temporary fixes ?

Even from your perspective you should like the lifting of the price caps. The higher prices would encourage conservation.

Which "new generation" capacity
are you talking about ?
Nuclear ? Wind ? Solar?

Some could be solar or wind but these would probably be marginal. Most of the new capacity probably should be nuclear but it is unlikely to happen. Unfortunately much of the new capacity will probably be powered by natural gas and if not gas then oil or coal. You I am sure have other issues with this but it will take care of the situation in CA. Which in any case is a regional phenomenon, and not particuarly relevant to my original comment that -
" It is food and energy. The amount of both that can be produced is increaseing faster then the growth of the world's population. ".

Agriculture is maxxed out

No it is not.

water is maxxed out .
You are going to build enough
de-salination plants to make a difference?

I don't think it is (except in some local areas). If fresh water truely becomes scarce then de-salination plants will make sense. Now what makes more sense is reduceing or eliminating water subsidies. A lot of water is wasted in some places because it is subsidized to such a low price that it is not economical to avoid wasteing it.

I think you are in for a rude awakening,
it is more than just cyclical ...the boom
has gone bust . Effeciency in manufacturing
has peaked , demand will be
falling off everywhere. Technology cannot
flourish if the basic manufacturing and
consumer markets they serve are dead .

Effeciency has peaked?? You mean we will never get more effcient then we are now? The slowdown might be a short quarter or two invatory reduction. Most likely it will be a bit longer then that. It might even extend to a year or two if we are unlucky, but it is a cyclical slowdown not an end of human economic progress.

I'll check back with you every 6mos

For how long. If I thought we would both remember it and care about it I would be willing to bet you that economic production and economic efficancy both increase both for the US and the whole world, in the next 5, 10, and 25 years.

PS: I am so glad to know that you were one of the first
40 years ago to champion the idea of recylcing.
I am sure in the 1960's you were right there
on the forefront of the movement <gg>

What do you mean by this? BTW I was born in 1968.
