If you had a clue, you'd know they couldn't execute a calandar [sic] spread with both the buy and the write driving the premium up to such rich levels. And, if they're paying 3/4+ (or more than 8% of the market value of the underlying) for 2 1/2 weeks of "insurance" with a strike 10% out of the money, then they put as little thought into their position as you put in your post - none. They deserve to lose their money and almost assuredly will.

Then again, they may be speculating on the long side, knowing or thinking they know something we don't.

Which seems more likely?

(that's a rhetorical question, BTW)
