BOSTON, Feb 27, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.) has strengthened its leadership position in the high-performance Optical Internet, capturing 48.1 percent of the overall global market for optical transport
equipment in the fourth quarter of 2000, according to the latest figures from the Dell'Oro Group, a leading market research firm.

Dell'Oro ranked Nortel Networks No. 1 'across the board' for the fourth quarter in DWDM-Long Haul (60.4 percent), DWDM-Metro (54.8 percent) and SONET/SDH (41.1
percent) as well as overall. This included a 7.6 percent increase in DWDM-Long Haul and a 4.9 percent increase overall from the third quarter of 2000.

For the year, Nortel Networks captured a 42.9 percent share of the overall global optical transport market, an increase of nearly 13 percent over 1999.

"Our leadership reflects an absolute focus on our customers globally, with a commitment to enabling their revenue growth and profitability through new
service creation and continuous innovation that ensures the lowest cost per managed bit," said Greg Mumford, president, Optical Internet, Nortel Networks.
"We expect to expand on this with the introduction of new optical and photonic switching, increased network intelligence and 40/80 gigabits per second networks."

"Our No. 1 market share in metro demonstrates that we are extending our long haul Optical Internet leadership into cities and closer to end customers with our Local Internet strategy," said Brian McFadden, president, Photonic Networks, Nortel Networks. "This is consistent with our overall theme of optics everywhere, intelligence throughout and unprecedented services."

Nortel Networks continues to set the industry pace with market-leading optical systems and component technology; a powerful, next generation product portfolio;
and complete customer fulfillment from service and network planning to deployment, management and support.

Nortel Networks has delivered Optical Internet solutions to more than 750 customers globally -- more than any other network provider.
