Now I will seriously ask the thread some basic (for me) questions: Is bad punctuation bad grammar? Is bad punctuation bad language? Are violations of rules or structure of language able to be categorized by significance? Are there "basics" to the language, violations of which are unacceptable to an educated person?

When I use commas incorrectly it bothers me much more that I'm making such errors on a grammar thread. In informal writing I'm not too concerned about commas or dashes or ellipses or virgules. (But I do want to use quote marks to enclose other people's words when I quote them.) Sometimes when I write I forget what's correct - if I ever knew in the first place. Since I speak and hear more than I write or read, I don't so easily forget "basics" such as agreement of subject and verb or proper case use of a simple pronoun, as in "with him and her". Can I not also expect my superiors to speak similarly?
