You miss the point. Toxic convertibles are meant to be converted right away into stock.

he s/h done a convertible when he had the chance - and i recall folks questioning why he didn't w/ the stock so ridiculously high. forget convertible... why didn't he just issue shares...

Absolutely... Unless they tried to and found no takers... The smart money might have been onto AMZN long before "analysts". Recall that debt issues were made outside the US. There is a reason for that....
