( BW)(WINSTAR-COMMUNICATIONS)(WCII) Winstar Awarded Twelfth Government Contract; Wins Share of $296 Million Philadelphia MAA Contract
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2001--Winstar Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WCII), a leading broadband services company, today announced that it has been awarded a Metropolitan Area Acquisition (MAA) award from the General Services Administration's (GSA) Federal Technology Service (FTS) for the city and surrounding metropolitan area of Philadelphia, PA. Winstar, along with AT&T, will share this contract, which has a potential value of $296 million over eight years. The Philadelphia MAA is the twelfth federal contract awarded to Winstar under the MAA program. Over the past 11 months, Winstar has secured MAA contracts to serve the metropolitan areas of Cincinnati, OH; Los Angeles, CA; Baltimore, MD; Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; St. Louis, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX; Denver, CO and Boston, MA. The total combined potential value for all awardees of the 12 contracts that Winstar has won is more than $3 billion over the eight-year span of the program. All previous MAA awards had been made to incumbent local exchange carriers and/or AT&T. "Our ability to win a total of 12 MAA contracts highlights the critical mass that we have achieved in building our end-to-end broadband network," said Bob McGuire, president and chief operating officer of Winstar's Large Account Solutions group. "Over the past six months, we have implemented services in five of our MAA cities, and we continue to demonstrate our ability to provide a full suite of broadband services and network solutions to even the largest businesses and organizations." Under the four-year MAA contract, which includes four additional one-year options, Winstar will provide data and local switched voice services, as well as dedicated transmission services, to government users in Philadelphia. The MAA contract also allows Winstar the opportunity to offer new technologies and services as they become commercially available, which ensures that government users can exploit the same technology enhancements and cost savings as the private sector. Eligible users include federal agencies, federal contractors and certain federally supported universities and laboratories, among others. |
