GV,

re: "Note that JIT is inflationary when compared to the old method of building inventory."

Depends on how you look at it. JIT takes inventory costs lower, in a competitive marketplace that should lower prices (ala Dell Computer). If demand exceed supply by a large amount, JIT can raise prices faster and higher than the old way of holding inventory. Information technology is supposed to increase the visibility, and reduce imbalances.

I agree that infrastructure investments have affectred the supply side of "old economy" industries. Not so technology, I suppose that is contributing to the current lopsided sell off in stocks.

Still, bottom line, a slowdown in the economy should reduce the supply/demand inflation scenario, at least in most sectors.

re: "What makes it even more difficult is that most people think that Greenspan can wave some magic wand and proclaim that the slowdown is over."

Folks are way too fast to blame the FOMC and way too fast to give them credit.

Should be a very interesting speech today, and an interesting market reaction. There sure is a lot of market psychology wrapped around what Mr. Greenspan says in the next couple of hours. More than I ever remember.
