Symmetrical x2(TM) Over ISDN Provides Near ISDN Speeds, Can Save Users Up To 50 percent on ISDN Tolls
U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ:USRX) today announced it is shipping new x2 features and ISDN enhancements for the Courier(TM) I-modem with ISDN/V.Everything(TM). Now, customers who use U.S. Robotics' Courier I-modem can send and receive information at x2 speeds, taking advantage of x2's higher performance for both uploads and downloads at near ISDN speeds -- at a fraction of the cost. Other new Courier I-modem features include automatic pass-through compression, data over voice and dynamic bandwidth allocation, which further maximize performance and reduce costs.
x2 Host Mode
With the Courier I-modem, U.S. Robotics is the only vendor offering a low-cost, desktop 56 Kbps remote access solution. x2 is a revolutionary analog technology from U.S. Robotics that takes advantage of today's telephone network to deliver data significantly faster than standard V.34 modems. The Courier I-modem can act as a remote access host, allowing a remote user to dial in and download information through the I-modem at x2 speeds. The product supports x2 host site applications, as well as symmetrical 56/64 Kbps data transfers.
The Courier I-modem can send and receive x2 calls as well as standard ISDN and analog transmissions. For small offices that require high speed connections, the Courier I-modem provides a simple, cost-effective x2 host solution allowing remote users to dial into the office network with their 28.8 analog modems, x2 modems or ISDN terminal adapters.
"The Courier I-modem is all you need to capitalize on the advantages of both analog and ISDN worlds," said Jennifer Schuster, group manager of client products at U.S. Robotics. "Because its interface to the network is digital while supporting an integrated x2 modem, the I-modem provides high speed x2 and ISDN data transfers to and from the small office or the Internet."
x2 in Both Directions (Symmetric) Provides Cost Savings
The Courier I-modem can achieve symmetrical x2 speeds when any x2 host product is on both ends of the connection. Because the actual connection is digital on both sides, symmetrical x2 data transmissions are possible up to 64 Kbps.
By using Courier I-modems in x2 symmetric mode, it's possible for users to increase bandwidth while maintaining the cost savings of sending data over voice. For example, data over voice makes ISDN data calls appear as voice calls to the telephone company and the call is tariffed that way. I-modem users will receive reduced ISDN usage charges with the data over voice feature and may decrease connect time based charges up to 50 percent in certain areas.
This symmetric mode may be used with any x2 host product. This includes another Courier I-modem, NETServer 8/16 I-modem, MP 8/16 I-modem or Total Control(TM) remote access server with PRI.
Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation
Additionally, The I-modem's Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) feature saves on toll charges by waiting until data transfers reach pre-determined threshold levels before bringing up the second B-channel. Usage charges for the second B-channel are incurred only when Multilink PPP is initiated through DBA. With DBA, the second B-channel is brought up and brought down from the call as data transfer requirements change.
Auto Pass-Through Compression for Maximum Performance
Auto pass-through compression ensures the highest data throughput possible by automatically detecting common host-based data compression, such as Windows(R) 95 Dial-up Networking, and sending it across the ISDN line. Because host-based compression is done before sending the data across the DTE port, data throughput rates up to 512 Kbps are possible, eliminating the serial port bottleneck and improving overall performance.
Additional Features: Universal Connect, Turbo PPP, Dynamic Voice Override
The Courier I-modem also includes:
-- Universal Connect, which automatically negotiates calls as ISDN or analog and connects at the highest possible speed supported by the device on the other end of the connection.
-- Turbo PPP(TM), a feature set designed by U.S. Robotics, which includes Multilink PPP, multiple forms of software based compression (Microsoft(R), Stac(R), Ascend(R)), and the ability to use Multilink PPP in applications where only PPP is supported.
-- Dynamic voice override supports voice communications over a standard analog phone, dropping one of its two 64 Kbps channels to send a voice call and automatically bringing the channel back up for data when the call is complete. This allows data to be sent without interruption.
The Courier I-modem is available in an external or internal version, list price between $339 - $399.
I-Team: Free Digital Services, Connections CD-ROM
Courier I-modem owners can take advantage of free ISDN provisioning through U.S. Robotics' I-team: 1-888-USR-ISDN or http//totalservice.usr.com . Additionally, the Connections CD-ROM, packaged with each Courier includes new data/fax communications software; Internet tools, like Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator; ISP offers; and more.
