And the NYer has a world famous fact-checking department! It seems to me that, in this case, the present tense is no longer applicable. What passes for fact-checking at most major magazines and newspapers (not just the New Yorker) is but a shadow of a more rigorously honest past. At the same time, editors have all but abandoned editing, allowing to pass unchallenged even the most glaring errors of grammar and logic.
