David R,

In Octel's last earnings report that was mailed to my home, Octel's tone was very bullish for next year. They mentioned that inventories are down.

Octel already has a lock on most of the Fortune 500 companies with their proprietary system. It's going to be hard for other vendors to convince them to switch to their voicemail platform. Also, what is the track record of Boston Technology and Centigram for service and reliability? How does Octel's price compare to the competitors? Octel's Sierra may adequately deliver the needs of most companies (even if it is old technology) for the right price compared to the competition. In addition, Octel has already established a good reputation as providing reliable service.

It appears that Octel does not think there is huge domestic growth in voicemail systems with the current platforms. My take is that Octel thinks the big growth and future of the industry lies in unified messaging. Perhaps that is why they are not overly concerned with IMA.

With the current voicemail systems, it appears Octel believes most of the growth is overseas. Octel's competitors seem ill equipped to match Octels strength in marketing and distribution in the overseas markets.
