I think that over simplifies things. Lots of other macro changes have occurred. For instance, before WWII, I don't think there was a significant derivatives market (or at least not on the scale we have today). People weren't trading the QQQ, because it didn't exist. Derivatives have some positive effects (e.g. enhancing liquidity), but I think they also increase volatility. Increasing volatility decreases (IMHO) the likelihood of sitting in a trough.
