The first time I ever arrived in California I was almost broke and was able to afford a $3.00 cabin in Lone Pine. I had a tank of gas so I also had a fried chicken special at the counter. A guy sat beside me. I was exhausted. He opened the conversation: "See you're from Tennessee!"

Me: "Yeah"

Him: "Did you ever hear of the Higgins Sisters?"

Me : "No."

Him:"Well I was married ot one of them."

Me: "Oh"

Him: "Yeah, Pore soul. She's dead now."

Me: "Oh, Sorry to hear it."

Him: "Yep. She's in the gorund now. Half of her body lies in Tennessee... and the other half in Mississippi."

Me {stops eating and finally looks at him]: Yeeah?

Him: "Yep. State line runs right down the middle of her grave. We done all we could to change it but we couldn't."

Me: "Oh."

Then I went out to the cabin and got in the army cot that served as the bed. Almost immediately it began to rock. I thought someone was underneath grabbing the bed and shaking it around. Turned out to be an earthquake. I had arrived in California for the first time, crossing Death Valley in a Renault Dauphine.
