It is not a coincidence that your quake was deep. The Seattle area is located along a steep subduction zone, and the fault is deep below Seattle.

This is quite different from the strike-slip nature of the San Andreas fault, which is much more dangerous because the movement is at the surface.

But isn't the basis for the quakes in either region the same....a Pacific plate pushing under the N. American plate? I had always thought east of the San Andreas was the N. American plate and west a Pacific plate.

In today's quake, it was the Cascadia plate trying to slip under the N. American plate.
