In California, the plates are rubbing horizontally. In Washington, the plates are colliding head on, with the westerly plate subducting under the North American plate.

Got it....btw it seems to me that the day to day activity is much less here than in CA.

The California situation is very well understood and predictable. The Pacific plate moves several centimeters a year to the north, which means that every 100-300 years, a major release of stress is going to occur along all regions of the San Andreas fault.

And I think what complicates the NW situation is the volcanic action which ties into the plate movement but not in a very precise way. Isn't that correct?
