3G might not happen.
Is QCOM toast?

That's an interesting question Mike and worthy of thought. Not Q being toast, LOL, but whether 3G will happen. There's no question 3G is on the way in Korea, Japan, USA, and now China because 3G is a simple upgrade of existing technology (soon to be more existing in China). But fortress Europe is uncertain - at least the timing is. They would like to push out wcdma as long as possible for gsm royalty reasons and for cdma ipr reasons.

Helping promote the quick adoption is the big bucks the service providers have sunk into spectrum - that's a fixed cost and they need to garner a return asap. Then there's the issue of millions of dollars spent on wcdma licenses by OEMs. And the more important issue might be how far the former wireless leaders are comfortable falling behind the rest of the globe. We shall see. Probably not too terribly far, imo.

In any case the Q is now entering a huge growth phase as existing cdma 2G infrastructure and handsets are moving to 2.5G with 144kbs speeds -- just started in Korea and Japan and will be in good ole USA very soon.

And there's still greater than 50% of our country to be upgraded to digital 2G cdma from analog service. Money in the bank there.

Q earned about a buck per share in fiscal '00 and is "comfortable" with forecasts of about $1.28 for '01 and the stock is trading in the 50s. Not a bad PEG at face value and then, realize that if 3G ever happens in Europe the Q will have a BRAND NEW revenue stream. BTW, China will also be a new revenue stream not yet worked into the 1.28 forecast.

Geez Mike I meant to give you a quick little reply but when us Q nuts get started it's hard to not get excited and go on and on and on. Just like Q royalties will...<g>
