Neocon, by now you've probably realized that my suggestion that you keep your head down was a good one. I have done well taking my own advice up until now, but I just can't help chiming in.

There are elements of morality which cover other matters, but
much of it has to do with social relations. These rules, at least in
their refined version, show us how we ought to behave in most
circumstances. Because we ought to behave in accordance with the
rules, they are obligations.

I can't agree that there is any obligation to conform with these inculcated rules for social relations. Perhaps I just have a more free-market orientation than you do. I accept an obligation to follow those rules that have been codified into law in my jurisdiction. The rest of them I can blow off if I want to. If members of society or society at large want to penalize me for not honoring what you consider obligations, it can do so as long as it does so within the law, but that doesn't make them obligations. I don't think I have any obligation to you more than to follow the law and any contracts, overt or implied, that we might strike. I pride myself on being a better person than that so I have set a higher standard for myself, but that is my choice. I don't think you have any more obligation to me than to follow the law and honor our contracts. Social stigma is not as effective as it once was for maintaining morality.
