murali and glenn: i do think amzn's 17m customers should not be underestimated as an asset. nor should it's front end interface, as wh pointed out recently. but no, that does not keep a ship in a storm from sinking. in my mind amzn's experience suggests that online retailing at best is a limited market when targeting specific categories (like books for instance!) the fact bezos chose to expand his vision far beyond that was an interesting and daring concept. but now proving ill-founded..... well at least he has 50m out of it so far. for better or worse, i don't see him like that tacky jain who has been milking insp for all it's worth for years now.....
