Beginning of recovery? Via chipset sales up 10% in February

Taipei, March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Via Technologies Inc., Taiwan's biggest chip designer by sales, said revenue last month rose a tenth from January because of improved sales.

Revenue in February rose to NT$3.3 billion ($102 million). Via said its chipsets, which connect all the components of a computer's motherboard, accounted for more than four-fifths of February sales.

''Demand for chipsets have improved, especially for our products that are compatible with'' Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s processors, said Manuela Mercandelli, a Via spokeswomen. Via's chipsets are able to run Intel Corp. and AMD technologies.

Via is also designing central processing units, the brains of a computer, as well as helping integrate graphic components into its core designs on a computer motherboard.

The company is pushing for the acceptance of so-called double data rate chips as a new, faster memory standard for computers.

Via shares fell NT$7, or 2.4 percent, to NT$286. Last month, the stock performed the best among the 50 largest Taiwan companies by market value, up 11 percent
