As best as I can figure out from my brief moments over there during the last 15 years, it was a seismic shift in the social structure. Overall labor wasn't all that efficient and you had people padded all over the place in lieu of unemployment benefits/welfare rolls. Then one day that changed. Wham, new ground rules. That on top of the equity and RE bubbles imploding, as well as this mistaken idea that they were absolutely the best in the world if they put their minds to it, was a real shocker they still haven't gotten over.
