Here's a good article on the 3G cluster-fork:

Wireless Watch: 3G is No Laughing Matter

redherring.com

Perhaps the reason that no killer app has emerged yet is because consumers don't want one. In a couple of new studies, consumers were indifferent to a host of services expected to arrive along with 3G networks. And, what's worse, consumers consistently chose lower costs over added functionality.

In a Jupiter Research study, the number of people who said they weren't interested in any applications on their phone outnumbered those who showed interest in mobile commerce (m-commerce) and videoconferencing. And as recently as six months ago, Forrester Research found that 82.5 percent of mobile customers have no interest in wireless data services.

Judging from the uninspiring demos at the Internet World Wireless show in New York last week, it's hard to fault consumers for their lack of interest. The applications vendors blame the delays on the network operators, while the network operators blame it on a lack of applications. The finger-pointing has already begun, and we haven't even seen a 3G phone yet.
