When I was experimenting with this stuff, I was using image files in the 150meg size, and Norton's System Doctor to monitor what was happening under the hood.

In practical terms, improvements that require Herculean efforts to detect are frequently a waste of time. My motivation was more to reduce my curiosity than to recapture the six seconds per decade of computing time being wasted.

Thanks to those on this thread, my memory's been jogged enough that I'm able to re-construct the thought processes leading to my chunk size selection.
