Lupus, Generally.

The Lupus Foundation estimates that between 1.4 to 2 million people in the United States have lupus. Further, an estimated 70% of individuals afflicted with lupus have nephritis. Although lupus may affect people of either sex, women are 10 to 15 times more likely to suffer from the disease than men. Current advanced therapies (cortisteroids and cyclophosphamide) generally act to suppress broadly the proliferation of many types of cells, including white blood cells, and are cytotoxic and/or immunosuppressive. The side effects of these drugs include anemia, low white blood cell count, and increased risk of infection. Their use may also predispose an individual to developing cancer.
