DVD-RAM Capacity

From my report on the SH conference I mentioned the following about their DVD display;

"GE/DVD -- had samples of about 6 CD's covering R, RW, DVD………Of special interest to me was a graphs showing Reflectance (of the chalcogenide material) vs Laser programming energy. It had the same stair-case form of OUM resistance vs. programming current. In this case a varying reflectance vs. energy. This is how they're projecting factors of 10 or more increased data storage utilizing this effect. "

Question: Has anybody seen this reference to a multi-level OPTICAL storage prior to this time--for ECD's technology? Has this been covered in any of their patents? If not, then I would expect a new patent issue soon covering this aspect.

This seems, to me, to be readily doable with present abilities to control laser programming pulses, both power and duration, and diode, and other, light sensors to sense the reflective light levels. Capacity in the >50Meg byte range for a consumer CD-RAM product is very significant IMO.
