Hi Mark, Here is a link that explains the IDE configuration options and restrictions in more detail: pcguide.com I am not very familiar with IDE RAID (SCSI is not that much more expensive and, at this point, is less proprietary in nature). However, if you look at the adaptec IDE RAID controller ( adaptec.com ), you will note that it implements 4 channels and each drive MUST be set as a master on its own channel. My guess would be that the UDMA raid setup you heard about has a RAM cache and lazy writes, has sequential writes (unbeknown to the user), or uses a proprietary superset of the IDE standard. Steve
