Gee, I am just now reading this week's posts WRT the FUDD missile launched by IJ at Cannes.
When I posed my question to IJ at the stock holder's meeting, I possibly would have been more hesitant to publicly endorse his comments had I known of the negative sentiment here on the thread. None the less I spoke how I feel, which is that the EU Service Providers will be hurting terribly in short order, and to offer them the hope of revenues in existing spectrum NOW seems to me to be most appropriate. Anyone thinking the Truth needs to remain unspoken, please refer to the tale of The Emperor's New Clothes, and Other Controlled Market Fantasies.
I view this present PR posture as Tables Turned against the GSM gang for the Korean switch to WCDMA. After all, nobody can roll out a 3G CDMA system to compete with established players using 1X at this time in Korea, so the Korean operators opted for *In The Future* WCDMA. Well, what's the diff? Let the EU have 1X now in 2G spectrum while they patiently await WCDMA. IF the GSM Guild doesn't get into the EU wheel-house and mandate speed limits on 2G spectrum...to block CDMA in EU.
As far as lost revenues, puhlease...there are NO WCDMA revenues, nor will there be any until the systems are capable of working. It is NOT possible to lose what does not exist...but it IS possible to take a stance and stop the eternal push-out of launch dates, hence, revenues. Having potential 1X revenues today beats the questionable delay for 3 years of if-come WCDMA. In 3 years the improvements to CDMA chipsets could be staggering, and the need for WCDMA could simply 'go away'. I won't be counting on it, but I would NOT be surprised. Three years is an eternity in technology.
I do not expect to see any CEO lay over and play dead, not Jorma nor IJ, but as an investor, I certainly refuse to lay over and play dead. So I spoke up. If anyone was so incensed by IJ's comments in Cannes, the microphones at the stock holder's meeting were available to the public, and you too are eligible to speak up, as did I. Regards, Martin Thomas PS: did anyone else hear Dr.J state that *after November* we might see some smaller EU SP's opting for 1X overlays? This is precisely what Ben Garrett has opined previously, or it quite possibly would have slipped past me, unnoticed. Anyone? mt |
