Texas Instruments Signs Manugistics by Demir Barlas, Line56 Wednesday, February 28, 2001
Texas Instruments plans to implement key Manugistics technology in the Educational Productivity & Solutions arm of its business. TI salespeople, regional steering teams, and business managers are expected to be frequent users of the solution. Using Manugistics NetWORKS, TI aims to better predict and manage global demand for the company's handheld products, including calculators and graphing devices. NetWORKS employs algorithmic engines to optimize forecasts which can then be compared against historical data. Business managers use forecasts for inventory planning, sourcing, and other core processes.
Manugistics EVP Terry Austin said that his company's solutions were especially attractive to electronics and high tech incumbents like TI. He added that features like Enterprise Profit Optimization (EPO) are a Manugistics differentiator. EPO software allows users to analyze their trading networks with a view to balancing cost-of-goods sold, cost-of-service, and profitability.
TI representatives said that Manugistics won out in a vendor selection process that effectively began in 1999, when TI first decided to reengineer components of its supply chain. TI added that Manugistics NetWORKS was up in six months, and that there are plans to bring more TI suppliers into the initiative.
TI's Educational & Productivity Solutions business unit is designed to bring the TI suite of learning technology and services to students and teachers.
