pc, i thought it was obvious that folks used to get pensions. people didn't pay taxes on pensions, now did they? why do you bring up only the part of the equation that prooftexts your point?

401ks play a big part now, for sure. they didn't used to. pensions used to play a big part. now they don't.

the bottom line is that people spend more relative to their take home than they ever have in recorded history. sure, many have 401ks (not all by any stretch and millions have diddly in their 401k). sure, many used to have pensions (not everyone - some had nothing.

even if you want to disregard pensions in some blind folly, you still have to admit that the savings rate has dropped considerably in the last 6 years! is the trend sustainable? is -10% doable? what about -20% or -30%? remember, manic bubbles NEED MORE... they MUST grow or collapse.
