TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Yukio Sakamoto, head of an affiliate of United Microelectronics Corp., said the affiliate together with Japan's NEC, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Hitachi, are preparing to invest US$2.6 billion to build a 12-inch wafer plant in Japan, reports the Commercial Times, quoting an eetimes.com report.
UMC Chairman John Hsuan denied the eetimes.com report, but added that doesn't mean UMC won't build a chip plant in Japan, the Commercial Times said.

TSMC, the world's No.1 silicon chip foundry, has slated to close its eight wafer fabs for annual maintenance on a rotating basis through May, said Jesse Chou, a spokesman of the Hsinchu-based foundry. The scale is more massive than the one-week maintenance that TSMC usually does around each February, some analysts said.
