...put temptation in the face of even the most honest...
In the old days, I used Lotus 1-2-3. The copy protection used was a scheme where the key floppy was formatted on a couple of track to be readable only through the installation program, and that to install the software on your hard drive, some special hidden files were installed in some secret hidden manner.
Well, sure enough, some hidden glitch messed up my hidden disk, destroying my hidden data, and forcing me to un-install my hidden Lotus files before fixing my hidden problem. I was lucky I was able to do this work. But I sure gained respect for the potential of disaster!
I didn't walk, I ran to get a pirated file 123.EXE to replace my copy-protected 123.COM file. Now I could make back-ups, didn't need worry about disk failure, and didn't need worry about those hidden files on hidden tracks on my hard disk.
I used Lotus 1-2-3 in an honest fashion. But I needed to protect myself too.
I don't welcome returning to the bad old days.
