The Coming Economic Crisis
of The New Millennium
This is the introduction to a five part series of articles on the prospects for the U.S. economy over the next 10 to 12 years. To review the separate articles of this series please see the links at the left side or bottom of this page.

Introduction

October 10 2000

Like a meteor streaking through the night sky the U.S. economy's bright orange glow is only a foreshadow to the impact ahead. While the explosion is guaranteed to down a few trees it may be as bad as the economic shockwave that rocked the U.S. in the 1970's with its fantastic oil prices high inflation and unemployment and erratic stock markets. But unlike the incoming meteors of recent fiction there is no way to divert this one--it's already on top of us.

Just as the economic and financial stability of the 1950's and 60's gave way to the chaos of the 1970's so will the wonderful growth and prosperity of the last two decades cede to a series of seemingly erratic market behaviors over the next 10 years. But all is not lost if you know where and when to look for the opportunities. No longer will the stock markets dominate the investment scene as many other venues become viable again.

During the next decade these are the types of market and economic behaviors you can expect to see:

High unemployment.
Erratic and high interest rates.
Sideways trading and volatile stock markets.
High oil prices with at least one energy crisis.
Growing trade and government deficits.
What follows is a series of five articles on the coming economic crisis that will impact the United States. These articles delve into the historical precedent for another wave of instability explain why it will happen again and discuss what to expect over the upcoming years. And based on the wildly variable markets and economies a list of people institutions and businesses that will win and a list of those that will lose has been prepared. Each of the links below takes you to a specific article designed to cover the coming crisis from these perspectives.
