Thurston,

I've already had all the near death experiences I need for a while. So, I'm more vigilant now than I have ever been.

Since I have an 11 year old in the house, I only keep semi-autos accessible. She can't work the slide. But she does have access to a 10/22 with a 25 rounder.

Age should not effect your ammo if it was factory ammo. If you have reloaded rounds you could have a moisture problem if the primer pockets were stretched or if, in the case of 9mm and .45 where there is no crimp, moisture can seep from the case mouth. Also, bullets from a decade ago are significantly less effective that those released in the last 5 years.

The challenge of a home intruder takes on a new light when they are between you and your child's bedroom.

IF you have no children at home, I'd swap the semi for a 4 inch .357 in stainless.
