HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Sony Pictures Classics has acquired worldwide rights to a documentary following the final days of late Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia.

``Grateful Dawg'' explores the musical friendship between Garcia and famed Blue Grass mandolinist and recording artist, David Grisman, the father of the film's director, Gillian Grisman.

``As a tribute to this great artist, we are planning to open the film on August 1, Jerry Garcia's (59th) birthday,'' said Sony Classics co-president Tom Bernard. ``'Grateful Dawg' gives you the rare glimpse into the soul of Garcia.''

Garcia died of a heart attack on August 9, 1995 after a long battle with drugs.
