Advances in understanding do not depend upon arrogance, but upon humility. There is no progress unless one can entertain the possibility that one is wrong. There is also no progress if we are not willing to accumulate the results of previous research and argument, systematize it, and pass it on. Both functions, transmitting the best data and analysis available at the time, and a willingness to take serious criticism and new evidence, are necessary. Without this progressive view of knowledge, we would not now be flying airplanes, building skyscrapers, transplanting hearts, or enjoying a nice conversation through our PCs and the Web.
